Build and Design

Since their introduction in October 2008, the unibody Macbook Pros have been manufactured from one single sheet of aluminium. Apple has improved on this design with the latest Macbook Pros, by removing the battery panel from the underside of the laptop. This results in a perfectly smooth finish on the bottom of the Macbook, but at the same time removes the ability for the user to remove the battery.

The seamless smooth underside of the Macbook Pro

Manufacturing the entire laptop from one single sheet of aluminium results in a rigid chassis void of joins. This means that there is less chance of fractures or breaks developing on the case. Also, given the properties of aluminium, the laptop is very unlikely to crack or break. However, aluminium is a relatively soft metal, so it might deform should heavy pressures be applied to it, such as physically sitting on the laptop. Aluminium is also a conductive material, so the heat is spread through the entire computer, providing more effective cooling, but also making the entire computer mildly warm to the touch after long periods of intensive processing. This is especially noticeable when running Windows.

Macbook Pro running Microsoft Windows Vista

In the hand, the Macbook Pro feels portable and comfortable. This is mainly because of the texture of aluminium, and the fact that the laptop is less than 1-inch thick. But weighting in at just under 2.5kg, the 15” Macbook Pro is light for a 15.4” laptop.

Aside from the glass bezel around and covering the glossy display of the Macbook Pro, the laptop is not highly vulnerable to fingerprints and smudges. However, the hinge connecting the monitor to the base of the laptop is occasionally not sufficiently rigid to hold the screen in place when the laptop is carried around with the screen open. Therefore, it is recommended not to carry the laptop around in this fashion.

Display and Sound

Apple has claimed that the displays on the new 15” Macbook Pros have “60% greater colour gamut” than the previous generation, which means that the new Macbook Pro displays can display a significantly wider range of colours. The new 15” Macbook Pros now rival the excellent monitors found on the 17” Macbook Pros, with darker blacks to brighter whites. Viewing angles, especially horizontal ones, are also very impressive on the 15” Macbook Pro, as can been seen on the following photos:

Viewing angles of the Macbook Pro screen. Horizontal viewing angles are very impressive, while vertical angles are as expected from a notebook screen. Note that the brightness is not turned to max – max brightness was a bit too much for my eyes

Of course, the Macbook Pro display still falls short when compared to a stand-alone MVA, PVA, or IPS display. But for a laptop, it is definitely one of the best in the market to date. One particularly nifty feature of the Macbook Pro is how it adjusts the brightness of the display depending on the brightness of the environment. This feature has been available in Macbooks since Apple released the unibody models, and can be turned off in the System Preferences.

The speakers in the Macbook Pros, like speakers in most notebook models, haven’t improved much over the years. They are louder than their 13” counterparts, but a pair of decent stereo headphones or dedicated speakers will sound much better.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The 15” Macbook Pro has a full size backlit Chiclet keyboard. I personally greatly enjoy the Chiclet design, and find it very easy and quiet to type on.

Macbook Pro keyboard and mouse.

Having been a user of Apple keyboards for several years, I have overcome all the initial difficulties I had when I first switched. But, some users might need to get used to the narrower “Return” or “Enter” key, as well as the lack of a dedicated forwards delete key. However, once new users realise that the Command key should be pressed with the thumb instead of their little finger, they should have no difficulties in adjusting to the Macbook Pro’s keyboard.

The backlighting on the keyboard is activated automatically in low light conditions, illuminating the entire keyboard. Just like the automatic adjusting of the display’s backlight, the automatic illuminating of the keyboard can be disabled in System Preferences, and the brightness of the illumination can be adjusted with the keyboard on the fly.

Macbook Pro’s illuminated keyboard

The multi touch trackpad on the 15” Macbook Pro has no physical buttons. This is because the bottom part of the trackpad can be pushed down, acting like a physical button. This design, which was introduced with the unibody Macbooks, has received mixed feelings from users, some praising it while others find it impossible to use. I personally find it not too different from the conventional trackpad with physical buttons, and think it is a very good way of achieving the aesthetically pleasing design without compromising on functionality.

In terms of performance, the trackpad works flawlessly in Mac OS X. There is also an array of options for performing a right click, from tapping the trackpad with two fingers, to physically pressing down on different areas of the trackpad.

In Microsoft Windows however, it is a totally different story. The default Boot Camp drivers offer very limited configurations and customisations for the trackpad, and the sensitivity of the trackpad is slightly oversensitive, making it flimsy to operate. This issue might be fixed with the release of Snow Leopard and new Boot Camp drivers, but in the meantime, I can only recommend users to get an external two-button mouse for use in Windows.

Heat and Noise

The Macbook Pro has excellent temperature management in OS X. It will remain silent almost all the time, and will cool down rapidly once idling. It is a very different story in Windows however, where the laptop runs noticeably warmer even when idling, and it takes longer to cool down. Still, the two fans in the Macbook Pro are very quiet, as is the default 500GB Hitachi hard drive.

Macbook Pro temperatures under light load

When under intensive load for long periods of time, the underside of the Macbook Pro does become rather uncomfortably warm for use on the lap. The top of the laptop also becomes mildly warm in that situation, due to the conductive properties of aluminium.

Obtaining an accurate reading of the temperature with the laptop under stress was rather challenging because of the highly efficient cooling system. The following screenshot was obtained following an immediate restart after running several benchmark tests under Windows.

Ports and Expansion

Ports on the left side of the Macbook Pro.

Right side of the Macbook Pro, showing the Kensington Lock port and the slot loading Superdrive

Front of the Macbook Pro, showing the Infra Red sensor and the power indicator

Back side of the Macbook Pro, with the display hinge and no ports

For a 15” laptop, the Macbook Pro features surprisingly few ports, and the few ports it does have received very strong and mixed views from users.

Apple has included a SD card slot in their Macbook models. This is very welcoming for users who have been requesting the feature for many years, but the slot is not multi-purpose and only supports full size SD cards. On the 15” Macbook Pro models, Apple has removed the Expresscard slot. This has infuriated many users who rely on Expresscard devices for expansion.

The Firewire port on the Macbook models have also been changed from Firewire 400 to Firewire 800. The increase in speed is a welcome change, but the Firewire 800 port is not directly backwards compatible with Firewire 400 devices. An additional converter is required to connect Firewire 400 devices to a Firewire 800 port, and this has received strong criticism from many users.

The Mini DisplayPort port on the Macbook Pro supports external displays up to 2560x1600. This means that it is possible to connect the 30” Apple Cinema Display to the Macbook Pro and run it at full resolution. However, Mini DisplayPort is licensed by Apple, and therefore requires an additional adaptor to convert it to other more mainstream display connectors, such as VGA, DVI, and HDMI.

All Macbooks and Macbook Pros have slot loading optical drives, meaning that mini-discs cannot be used on the Macbooks as they will become stuck in the drive. The battery indicator at the side of the laptop is an entertaining feature, although its usefulness is rather limited.

Both USB ports on the 15” Macbook Pro are located on the left side of the laptop, which would significantly handicap users who require the port in a more convenient location on the laptop, such as right handed users of the Apple wired Mighty Mouse. The only area in terms of ports where the 15” Macbook Pro improves on the 13” Macbook Pro is the presence of separate Audio-In and Audio-Out ports.

At home, I personally have my Macbook connected to my gigabit Ethernet network, hooked up to a 24” monitor which has a built in USB hub, and wired up to a 2.1 sound system. In that respect, having all ports on one side is useful. However, those with slightly different requirements than mine might experience difficulties and limitations when expanding their Macbook Pro with peripherals.

Performance and Benchmarks

Below are a number of results from benchmark test run on the 2.8Ghz 15” Macbook Pro.

Xbench:

In OS X, the Xbench benchmark test was run multiple times with both the nVidia 9400M and the nVidia 9600M GT.

With the 9400M, results peaked at 151.41 points, and bottomed at 138.33. With the 9600M GT, results peaked at 151.77 points, and bottomed at 147.92. From the results, it is clear that the bottlenecking factor of the Macbook Pro is its 500GB Hard Drive. For the 9400M, there is a clear impact on system RAM as it is shared with the GPU.

Overall, the 2.8GHz 15” Macbook Pro shows an overall improvement of 4.34% over the previous top end (2.66GHz) 15” Macbook Pro (145.43), and an overall improvement of 7.53% over the next configuration (2.66GHz) 15” Macbook Pro (141.14).

An interesting anomaly shown by the Xbench results is in the graphics tests. The results between the 9400M and 9600M GT are surprisingly similar, possibly an indication that the graphical tests executed by Xbench fail to fully stress the nVidia GPUs in the Macbooks.

XBench 9400M benchmark results

XBench 9600M GT benchmark results

Further tests were carried out in Windows, to get a more accurate and comparable result for the performance of the Macbook Pro. The following tests were all carried out in Windows Vista SP1, with the nVidia mobility drivers 186.03 installed.

PCMark Vantage:

PCMark Vantage yielded a result of 4304 PCMarks. This is a significant 22% improvement from the 3,525 PCMarks scored by the next configuration (2.66GHz) 15” Macbook Pro , and an enormous 19% improvement from the 3606 PCMarks of the previous top end (2.66GHz) 15” Macbook Pro .

3DMark06:

The 2.8GHz 15” Macbook Pro scored a total of 5978 3DMarks. This is a slight 2.70% improvement from the previous top end (2.66GHz) 15” Macbook Pro3. This result is hardly surprising, as the GPU in both notebooks are identical. The reason for the slight improvement is due to the faster processor.

3DMark Vantage:

In 3DMark Vantage the Macbook Pro scored 2045 3DMarks, with a 1602 GPU score and a 12011 CPU score.

Resident Evil 5:

Running at 1280x800 resolution in DirectX 9.0c with Motion Blur enabled, no AA, and all other settings to High, the Macbook Pro managed an average of 27.8 fps on the Fixed Benchmark, and 26.7 fps on the Variable Benchmark.

In DirectX 10, under the same settings, the Macbook Pro also managed 27.8 fps on the Fixed Benchmark, and an interesting 27 fps on the Variable Benchmark.

Those numbers might sound a bit low, but the demo looked gorgeous on the Macbook screen and was comfortably playable. It’s just a shame the person playing during the demo was so unskilled.

Macbook Pro running the Resident Evil 5 benchmark in DirectX 10 mode

wPrime:

wPrime was ran a number of times to benchmark the performance of the CPU by calculating the square roots of 32 million numbers executed in four separate threads.

The results from wPrime were all extremely similar, with the fastest result at 28.222 seconds, and the slowest at 28.781 seconds. These results are average results for the T9600 CPU (fastest recorded on hwbot.org is 26.74 and slowest is 31.10).

HDTune:

HDTune was executed a number of times to obtain a fair comparison of the performance of the 500GB 5400rpm Hitachi HD.

The average transfer rate peaked at 63.3MB/s, and bottomed at 62.8MB/s. The lowest recorded transfer rate was 28.2MB/s, with the highest recorded at 83.6MB/s. These results are pretty much en par with other 500GB 5400rpm mobile hard drives.

Battery Life

Apple boasts that the 73W/hr battery in the Macbook Pro is capable of running the machine for up to 7 hours, and from what I’ve seen so far, this claim is surprisingly accurate. The battery of the Macbook Pro is by far the longest lasting battery I’ve ever seen in a notebook of this size. With the dedicated 9600M GT enabled, I personally get about 4 to 5 hours of light usage, with wifi and Bluetooth enabled, and without having to turn down the brightness of the display or having to disable the keyboard backlighting. With the 9400M, I get around 6 to 7 hours, which is very impressive. During moments of inactivity, the battery indicator on the Macbook Pro would display up to 9 hours of remaining life.

In Windows, battery life is reduced, but obtaining 3 to 4 hours of usage with the 9600M GT under light usage is still achievable.

Limited SATA?

When Apple initially released their Macbook refresh in June 2009, all models had their Hard Drive SATA II interface limited to 1.5Gbps (150MB/s), as opposed to the usual 3.0Gbps (300MB/s) throughput rate. Although this does not affect anyone using a mechanical hard drive (as can be seen from the HDTune benchmarks in the previous section – transfer rates peaked at 83.6MB/s), users of Solid State Drives saw the performance of their drives subsequently bottlenecked.

However, Apple released a software update which remedies this issue shortly afterwards, and the Hard Drive interface of Macbooks have now been restored to 3.0Gbps.

SATA information of the Macbook Pro with Apple’s Firmware 1.7 installed. The speed of the SATA interface is 3Gbps, as can be seen in the circle.

Conclusion

So, should you get a standard top end 2.8GHz 15” Macbook Pro? The short answer would be yes. However, at £1,699/$2,299, it is no doubt the least favourite when it comes to value for money in the entire Macbook range, disregarding the values from the PCMark Vantage benchmark results.

Most of its disadvantages are identical to the other models in the range, and arise from its limited selection of ports. Most of its advantages are also identical to the other models in the range, from the amazing battery life and the excellent aluminium chassis, to the wonderful display and silent cooling system. However, for those who absolutely require the 512MB graphics card or the faster 2.8GHz CPU, or for those who wouldn’t mind spending the extra amount, the top end 2.8GHz 15” Macbook Pro is definitely a wonderful laptop to own.

Pros:

  • Excellent rigid seamless aluminium chassis
  • Light and easy to carry for a laptop of its size
  • Automatically adjusting backlight illuminated keyboard
  • Gorgeous LED-backlit display with 60% greater colour gamut
  • Incredible battery life
  • 22% improved performance from the next model according to PCMark Vantage
  • Silent in Mac OS X

Cons:

  • Only two USB ports
  • No ExpressCard slot
  • Requires adaptors in order to connect to external displays
  • SD Card slot only supports full size SD cards
  • High price/performance ratio according to Xbench
  • Non-user-removable battery
  • Dodgy and limited trackpad drivers in Windows

The HP ProBook 5330m currently has a starting price of $799 with an Intel Core i3 processor but an extra $100 gets you the faster Core i5 processor included in our review unit.

Building and Design
Lets be honest. Anyone who thinks that the new HP EliteBook 5330m was not designed to compete directly with Apple 13-inch MacBook Pro is probably suffering from some kind of illusion. The 13.3-inch EliteBook 5330m combines the beauty of coated aluminum MacBook Pro with the enterprise features of Windows HP EliteBook.

The 5330m is less than 1 inch thick (if you do not have rubber feet on the bottom of the laptop) has a dual-tone colors, brushed aluminum chassis and a backlit keyboard and a company of HPs first laptop to offer " Beats Audio "software with enhanced audio playback from the speakers and headphones.

The ProBook 5330m has a 13.3 inch anti-glare screen (1366x768) and the second generation i-series Intel Core processors, including dual-core i5 i3 and variants. It has no internal optical drive, but weighs only 4.0 pounds.

Planning is a quantum leap above most ProBook HP Notebook PCs - which are mostly only a low-cost alternatives for enterprise-class line of HP EliteBook. 5330m to give you the strength aluminum construction combined with the bottom of magnesium alloy and coated with rubber, black paint similar to what you find is a Lenovo ThinkPad business-rugged notebooks.

The overall construction is exceptionally strong for a laptop that has a starting price of only $ 799. At first glance, the construction and design has a lot of drool worthy features for both computer geeks and computer users on average. Of course you can not have everything on a budget.

Ports and Features
Most laptops designed for business has an impressive number of ports so you can connect your computer to any number of devices. Unfortunately, HP did not understand that many ports in the 5330m ProBook designed for a limited budget of businesses and consumers. Of course, you can not get an integrated DVD player. The result is two USB 2.0 (three if you count the eSATA / USB 2.0), Ethernet, VGA, HDMI, SD card slot and headphone jack.

Gone are the days of an ExpressCard expansion slot, FireWire, or just the microphone and headphone jack. HP has decided to offer a DisplayPort to HDMI instead of the 5330m because consumers are increasingly likely to connect their portable consumer-type or HDTV monitor.

The only connection I am not disappointed with this port USB 3.0. USB 3.0 is the new USB standard, and we are seeing more and more external storage solutions and accessories make faster offered by this port. I realize that HP has a price of $ 899 or less, but this 5330m should be involved in USB 3.0.

Screen and speakers
ProBook 5330m is an anti-glare 13.3-inch HD 720p (1366x768) with LED backlight. HP does not offer alternative options screen at the time of writing. Most of our editors agree that 1600x900 and higher resolutions of 1920x1080 are preferable to larger screens, but 1366x768 is probably around the maximum resolution you want to pack on a screen 13-inch, assuming you actually care to read the text. Of course you can always get a screen resolution larger than 5330m or via the VGA or HDMI.

The main advantage of the anti-glare (matte) screen is that it reduces glare and makes the display suitable for outdoor sunlight. I must commend HP for this. Yes, the glossy screens have better contrast and color saturation is generally better, but laptops are made to be mobile, which means that people sometimes use outdoors. I wish more modern laptops come with anti-glare screens as standard.

Viewing angle is pretty average: Color and brightness as the right or when viewing pages, but tilt the screen forward or back more than 5 degrees, and you begin to notice color distortion and inversion. The contrast ratio is way low - we measured at 201:1, with a peak luminance of 152 nits in the center. This display device is great for working in Microsoft Office see an occasional movie, but youll probably want to connect an external monitor if you are color-critical.

HP borrowed from the Beats to the sound processing by the injured and put in a new ProBook 5330m to give this laptop a better sound. In fact, the 5330m stereo speakers sound a bit better than a typical micro-sized speakers can be found in laptops are designed for small and medium-sized enterprises. However, there is only so much you can do with the Beats Audio two speakers, which are smaller than the size of a dime.

The biggest problem we have is the location of high-quality audio speakers. Both speakers are on the lower front of a laptop instead of at the top of the keyboard, or beside the display. As a result, the sound is directed upward and toward you.

In fact, if you use the 5330m that the "portable", so the sound is muffled against his legs. Similarly, if you decide to use your laptop in bed, then an entry is deleted. That said, if you use the 5330m on the table sound "bounce" off a desk hard surface and you can feel good.

The keyboard and touchpad
HP ProBook 5330m is chiclet-style keyboard with extra keys for the interim to help prevent typos are physically smaller, like the portable 13-inch laptop. The keys are flat and subdued texture. Key mobile and throws are excellent, it is usually very easy to write, and is a very nice experience. The structure is a platform so that the keyboard flexes under high pressure to enter. Fortunately, the HP with its own page, page down, end and home keys on the right side of the keyboard.

As you can see in the pictures above, HP has given the 5330m with a backlit keyboard for easier typing in dark environments, such as a meeting room for a PowerPoint presentation or when you are on a flight in the afternoon. My only complaint about the backlit keyboard is that there is a significant amount of light to "bleed" around each key.

This contributes to the overall visibility in darkened rooms, but can also be detrimental at times. I hope HP is deducted from the edge set of keys to block too much light or backlit keyboard made adjustable. As it is now, you can turn the keyboard backlight on or off (you can adjust the brightness to your liking).

Given that the 5330m is clearly "inspired" by Apple MacBook Pro, Im a little surprised that the Synaptics touchpad is so small. It is larger than the touchpad on the HP EliteBook 2560p, but it is not large enough to be as "convenient", as the touchpad on the MacBook Pro. The touchpad surface is very smooth and easy to use, even if the hand is wet by holding a drink. The touchpad buttons dedicated left and right very well with soft, cushioned clicks.

Performance and benchmarks
Our review unit ProBook 5330m has an Intel Core i5-2520m dual-core processor (2.5 GHz, 3.2 GHz Turbo Boost up, 3 MB L3 cache), Integrated Intel HD 3000 graphics and 4 DDR3 RAM at 1333MHz. System performance is quite good, with a combined speed and multitasking capabilities on or near the top of his class.

Its performance is as good or better than the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 (a 13-inch business / consumer laptop designed to be worthy of lust for PC users). The ProBook 5330m seems an even better deal when you consider that the 5330m is only slightly more expensive than the HP Pavilion dm3t, but is basically twice as fast with four times the graphics power, all in a stronger chassis.

The system is compatible with 720p HD video very well, but when connecting to an external monitor ProBook who had left a few pictures during playback of 1080p in some file formats. The 500 GB hard drive 7200 rpm rotation speed is reasonably fast Hitachi PC for basic work, but we have seen much faster than hard drives in other HP laptops.

Heat and noise
While HP has done a lot better in terms of heat management in his notebooks, won 5330m ProBook unusually hot during certain periods of our review. Typical of inactivity or web browsing temperatures remained below 90 degrees Fahrenheit, but the bottom of the laptop maximum temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit when we stressed the system with our tests.

The palmrests and aluminum upper deck of the laptop kept cool, but the basic magnesium alloy has finished most of the radiant heat. The fan was only noticeable when the laptop was achieved time high and the fan operating at maximum speed to push heat away from the basic components.

Battery Life
ProBook 5330m delivered a decent life of the battery during our battery of standard tests. Our review of the notebook has a standard 6-cell 41Whr Lithium-polymer battery. The battery is located behind the front quick release on the bottom of the notebook so you can change the battery when you are on the road, but because it is inside the laptop behind the base plate you can use a higher capacity battery.

During the test we set the screen brightness to 70%, turn the Wi-Fi active (updating a web page every 60 seconds) and set up Windows 7, the profile of a balanced diet. The notebook is left for 5 hours and 21 minutes. This is quite close to "5 hours and 30 minutes" of battery life required on the HP Web site. In short, the battery is good, but not as impressive as what we have seen with other 13-inch notebook.

Conclusion
At the end of the workday, the HP EliteBook 5330m is the type of mobile phone business, you will be happy to take home. For only $ 799 or $ 899, you get a notebook fully equipped with rugged construction, good performance of the keyboard with LED backlight Nice.

Of course, you know what price is required to accept the limited configuration options, restricted gates, and the average (but still correct) the battery life. I was not too happy to see how hot the bottom of this laptop is when running graphics intensive tasks, but HP is giving you a lot of PC for a relatively small amount of cash.

For a laptop that was designed (at least in part) to be a cheaper alternative to the Windows 13-inch MacBook Pro is 5330m ProBook a pretty impressive machine. I really recommend this laptop on Lenovo ThinkPad X1 (probably the king of the hill between the Windows PC in this class).

NVIDIA at SIGGRAPH 2011

  • NVIDIA at SIGGRAPH 2011

As announced in a previous article some days ago, NVIDIA was present at the SIGGRAPH 2011 event and now the event is over. Here, I have provided you some some articles that was written before and after the event at the NVIDIA blog, dealing the the technologies that would be presented/was presented at the event.

First, let`s look at the article after the event :-

SIGGRAPH Attendees Flock to NVIDIA for Graphics Tech Talks

NVIDIA at SIGGRAPH 2011
NVIDIA didn’t just show off snazzy, new computer graphics and design technologies at SIGGRAPH 2011, we also helped SIGGRAPH attendees get up to speed on the latest tools of the trade with various tech talks, theater presentations and a panel discussion.

On Monday, August 8th, NVIDIA hosted seven interactive “Tech Talks” that explored the impact of GPUs on state-of-the-art CG and interactive design. With a panel discussion and technical “deep dives” covering everything from advanced ray tracing and photorealistic rendering to simulation and tessellation, Monday’s Tech Talks kicked off SIGGRAPH 2011 in a big way.

On top of that, NVIDIA presented all manner of tech demos and case studies throughout the show at the NVIDIA Technology Theater, sponsored by HP. From game engines to virtual moviemaking, the theater presentations were full of insight into state-of-the-art tools. For those of you unable to make it out to the show in person, don’t forget that you can still catch the live stream.

The folks at SIGGRAPH are an enthusiastic bunch, and we’re honored by the impressive turnout at our booth. Check out the photo gallery below to see what the NVIDIA Tech Talks and Technology Theater looked like at the show.

Oh, and don’t forget, there’s still one more day left in the SIGGRAPH 2011 conference, so stop by the NVIDIA booth before it’s too late.

Here`s one article published before the event on the 9th August 2011 :-

Adobe & NVIDIA Team Up for Ray Traced Compositing

One thing you’re going to want to check out at SIGGRAPH 2011 in Vancouver is the Adobe pod within the NVIDIA booth, where Adobe is showcasing an experimental technology demo of GPU ray tracing for motion graphics.

By using ray tracing, a motion graphics artist can quickly generate eye catching reflections, refractions and accurate lighting – all without being a 3D rendering expert. GPUs make ray tracing practical for production. This new renderer is fast enough for you to actually scrub the timeline when using Fermi-class GPUs. With a couple of GPUs, the interaction is fast enough for you to do all your work WYSWIG within the production renderer and forget about the OpenGL mode.

Adobe’s research project is running within a test application framework that allows the compositing of 3D shape and text layers in a 3D environment. What’s remarkable is that they’re doing this with a fully ray traced renderer. While they also have an OpenGL renderer for realtime manipulation, its production rendering is 100% ray traced.

What made it practical for Adobe to build this, and reach such high performance levels, was the NVIDIA OptiX ray tracing engine. Adobe worked with NVIDIA to leverage OptiX to build their new renderer in just a few months. The job of OptiX is to let the developer concentrate on rendering while it handles all the intricacies of making it go fast on the GPU – and Adobe’s results are proving it’s good at its job.

Come visit the NVIDIA booth at SIGGRAPH to see this technology demo running on Quadro 6000 and Tesla class GPUs.

And now, here another post published before the SIGGRAPH 2011 event on the 10th August 2011 :-

NVIDIA Photorealistic Rendering Technology Demo At SIGGRAPH 2011

SIGGRAPH has traditionally been the conference at which NVIDIA’s Advanced Rendering Center’s innovations have been announced, and this year is no exception. We’re proud to unveil Autodesk’s upcoming 3ds Max 2012 Subscription Release with ActiveShade iray at SIGGRAPH 2011.

Of the many 3ds Max artists adopting iray, quite a few have voiced the desire for an interactive solution to reduce their design turnaround time. They recognize that iray is inherently suited to interactive editing, since it progressively shows full global illumination results over the entire image.

Now, the good news – attendees at the SIGGRAPH 2011 conference will have the opportunity to see a preview of interactive iray in 3ds Max. This preview is not just a technology demonstration, but a sneak peak of new functionality coming in the Autodesk 3ds Max 2012 Subscription Advantage Pack later this fall (see Autodesk for ship dates).

So, in the near future, 3ds Max subscribers will be able to interactively edit their scenes while iray renders live in the 3ds Max ActiveShade viewport. They will be able to edit geometry; add, delete and move objects; create, position and orient lights; and edit materials and light characteristics – all while watching the scene render with full global illumination and no compromises.

Even better, the image shown developing in the ActiveShade viewport is exactly the same as what they will get in the iray final-frame production renderer in 3ds Max, not just a limited preview of it.

To take things even further, “Project Maximus”-based workstations will allow 3ds Max to run with full viewport interactivity, while accelerating iray rendering on one or more attached GPUs.

SIGGRAPH 2011 will also provide attendees an opportunity to see where photorealistic rendering may be heading in the future. Last year, at SIGGRAPH 2010, we demonstrated a technology preview of iray rendering in the cloud, utilizing large-scale, on-demand GPU resources to accelerate photorealistic production rendering, as well as live design reviews via the web.

This year we will be showing off this capability as part of a 3ds Max workflow, allowing any Max seat to render like a supercomputer by leveraging an Amazon cloud cluster of dual-GPU machines.

Anyone interested in physically-based interactive rendering in Design and DCC should stop by the NVIDIA booth (#453) or the Autodesk booth theater to see how the combination of iray rendering, 3ds Max and NVIDIA GPU technology will revolutionize the way you produce photorealistic scenes.

Well, these were 3 posts made at the NVIDIA blog regarding the SIGGRAPH 2011 event. I hope these helped you have a better idea of some of the things NVIDIA presented there.

AMD Fusion Developer Summit 2012 Fusion12 Announced

  • AMD Fusion Developer Summit 2012 (Fusion12) Announced

The AMD Fusion Developer Summit 2012 (Fusion12) was announced in a press release on the 07 Dec 2011. This is available below:-

AMD Announces Fusion12 Developer Summit
AMD Fusion Developer Summit 2012 (Fusion12) Announced
AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced that AMD Fusion Developer Summit 2012 (Fusion12) will be held on June 11-14, 2012 in Bellevue, Washington. The company’s annual developer summit will return to the Meydenbauer Center and the Hyatt Regency in Bellevue.

This event will build on the success of the sold out AMD Fusion11 earlier this year, where more than 700 software development leaders from industry, academia, and government converged on the forefront of heterogeneous computing. The summit offers an engaging opportunity to learn more about next-generation software development and Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) technology, central processing unit (CPU) and graphics processing unit (GPU) processor technologies, and programming methods using industry-standard application programming interfaces (APIs) such as OpenCL™, OpenGL™, Microsoft DirectCompute and C++ AMP.

“AMD exceeded my expectations with their AMD Fusion Developer Summit this past June,” said Jon Peddie, principal and founder, Jon Peddie Research. “I saw an open and instructive exchange of ideas on software development, tools and APIs, free from the marketing hype that you get at many conferences.”

“As the only provider of world-class APUs, GPUs and CPUs, AMD is leading advancement of heterogeneous computing and OpenCL, both of which have reached a tipping point as demand grows for new user interfaces and immersive computing experiences,” said Manju Hegde, corporate vice president, AMD Fusion Experience Program. “AMD has a history of customer-driven innovation based on industry standards and AMD Fusion12 will be the ideal place for developers, academics and innovators to collaborate around that software innovation.”

Call for Presentation Proposals
AMD invites pioneers of next-generation software and the rapidly growing field of heterogeneous computing to share their latest work and research findings in the form of presentations. Presenters will have an opportunity to advocate new methodologies and paradigms, garner support for industry standards, and network with developers, innovators and academics who will help define the course of this technology. Presentation proposals are invited on the following topics:

  • Browsers and Web Apps
  • Cloud Computing – Servers and Data Center
  • Gaming and Consumer Graphics
  • Heterogeneous Computing
  • Innovative Client Experiences
  • Multimedia Processing
  • Professional Graphics and Visual Computing
  • Programming Languages and Models
  • Programming Tools
  • Security

Presentation proposals must be submitted by February 17, 2012. All proposals will be reviewed by a summit board composed of researchers, academics and practitioners in the field. Selected candidates will be notified by March 15, 2012.

Building on the Success of AMD Fusion11

Approximately 700 attendees were present at AMD Fusion11 where Microsoft first announced C++ AMP. Attendees engaged in industry keynotes, interactive technical sessions, pre-summit tutorials and hands-on labs to explore advanced parallel processing programmability and tools. The results from a post-event survey reinforced this focus with more than 80 percent of respondents saying they attended to learn about the latest advances and trends in heterogeneous computing. Moreover, when choosing an application programming interface for parallel processing, 75 percent of attendees reported that they either are deploying OpenCL now, or plan to do so in their future software development.1 AMD Fusion11 featured keynotes from Microsoft, ARM and Corel, as well as AMD. Additionally, there were many technical sessions and presentations about a range of topics including developer tools, enterprise computing, security, professional graphics and visual computing, and a roundtable discussion addressing “Why Industry Standards Foster Innovation.”

Morgan Kaufmann publishers also used AMD Fusion11 as a backdrop to promote their new book about OpenCL and application programming interfaces (APIs) titled, “Heterogeneous Computing with OpenCL,” which is now available.

Case
Looking at the entire case, one can hardly find any appreciable change. A simple case depth is increased by 8 mm according to the glasses. But with the naked eye is not that really stands out. Dell says the laptop have a maximum height of 21 mm. It is not entirely correct, because the battery out for about 10 mm on the bottom of a laptop in this area.

This is not a significant effect when used on a table and bottom of the base may also be able to treat the waste without even better. However, you must get along with the arms bulging battery of the wireless network. Even if the base would be helpful.

Your V131 looks almost exactly like its predecessor. The concept of enclosing the metal parts will still be a high value recognition. But the V131 is not just your score for its look and feel, will also benefit the stability of surrounding metal parts. Just as the bottom cover and the base of the screen to face a highly selective pressure.

Warping can remain within the limits of both parties. However, a clear admit your loss, as the face of Apple MacBook Air, 13, who was also the seat back in time - and that even if the air is only half as thick as your.

The opening mechanism is substantially preserved. Thus, the hinges are installed behind the screen where the case is high. Thus, the display closest to the customer than they are with traditional solutions. Although the metal hinges to give a strong impression that they can not stop the screen quite heavily on the brink. It was a rather unpleasant trial, particularly when using an unstable surface, such as directly on your lap.

Finally, we would like to deal with the weight. The new V131 adds to your weight of 1850 grams of 6-cell battery, which is a standard configuration in Europe. Your V130 was then about 200 grams lighter than 1638 grams.

Once again we look beyond the horizon, for example, we see the Samsung 13-inch Premium 900X3A, £ 1.35, and the Apple MacBook Air 13 with 1.33 pounds of the best classes. Sony Vaio is pretty close to your SA2Z with 1.65 pounds. The first standard Dell Inspiron 3350 is not only thicker (up to 29 mm), it is also much heavier than the V131 with 2.19 pounds.

Connections
Dell has made a significant improvement in the interfaces. V130 three USB 2.0 ports have been replaced by two Super Speed USB 3.0 ports and one USB 2.0 port, which can supply power to external devices when the notebook is off. Your yet installed the VGA and HDMI video connections. There is no docking port.

There have been some changes in the agreement because of the battery port. With the exception of the takeover and Kensington slot, all ports were moved to the side edges and stay comfortably in the back region. This should keep the obstructions caused by the wires connected inside. Move the card reader from left to right and still no optical drive.

Exchange of information, your 131 has a LAN port (Realtek Gigabit Ethernet), wireless (Intel Wireless N1030), Bluetooth 3.0 + HS, and, if desired, even for mobile broadband Internet (Dell 5550). Integrated UMTS modem costs about $ 100 extra.

While the SIM card slot is still relevant easily accessible on the front of the Vostro V130, had to move to cool.

The Vostro V131 also offers a wide range of security features such as a company of input devices. The fingerprint reader included in the scope of products and services offered to name one example.

However, many of the security services of the available data (Trendmicro Worry Free, DataSafe Online Backup) and support services (up to three years of service with in-situ ProSupport next business day, the optional Accidental Damage Protection). In the three years of service rather than a difference of 160 euros net of the standard warranty of 12 months.

Display
The specifications of the screen set was maintained (13.3 inch, 1366x768 pixels, mat. But the ID screen of our test unit deviates from the V130 built-in display (AUO312C). For example, Dell installs new components here.

Unlike your V130, V131, unfortunately, your lost about 15% of its maximum brightness of 185 cd/m2 and the center of the screen. The new display is an average of 170 cd/m2. Lighting 82% is still good.

V130 was not a model, which has a contrast ratio up to 144:1. The V131 is not much better: 165:1 to black value of 1.12 cd/m2. These figures are also likely to be responsible for our only moderate overall subjective impression of the color reproduction. This is just a small problem with office tasks, but the media is suffering from a case.

Reproducible color space differs from the screen than its predecessor, but it plays basically the same series. sRGB is clearly unattainable, which is not bound to decline, with the exception of professional photo editing and graphics.

This applies as soon as you venture to the Vostro V131. You must accept a greater or lesser degree change and loss of brightness depending on the viewing angle on the screen and the position of the sun when the sun provides ambient light. Anti-reflective surface can effectively prevent the light from the field, but the brightness is not enough to provide a perfect outdoor use in any situation.

The screen installed could not impress us with respect to viewing angle stability, either. Work areas show very narrow, especially along the vertical plane of vision. Therefore, the angle of inclination must often be adjusted by mobile use. As usual, the screen is better on the horizontal plane. But the narrow viewing angles also cause increased loss of contrast here.

Performance
One of the most important points in the catalog to update the Vostro V131 is likely that the new hardware. ULV processors Arrandale after his predecessor, Vostro V130, the latest Intel sand range jumper is done in the new V131 - that is, regular 35W TDP chip.

The only remains are ULV Intel Celeron 847 CPU. It is clearly behind the choice of selecting a core clock of 1.1 GHz and turbo functions: i3-2310M (130 €) and i5-2410M (180 €).

Main memories are also moving faster on the new Vostro V131 with Sandy Bridge. The Vostro has a capacity of 8 GB of memory in two banks of the model (2x4096MB) DDR3 1333MHz. The basic configuration of 2 GB only in the online configurator is not far off, however.

You are well equipped with 4 GB (90 €) today. 8 GB makes sense for special applications (190 €). A brief description of current market prices for Module 4 GB of 1333 MHz (new) question the policy of additional Dell.

The corresponding components can be purchased for from (gross) 20 euros and simple even for inexperienced users, introduced by keeping the lid on the bottom of the unit.

Processor: Intel Core i5-2410M
Our test car was equipped with the strongest available to the V131 your CPU, Intel Core i5-2410M chip is classified as a mid-range processor, the Intel portfolio. However, it includes the most important and useful to the latest range of Sandy Bridge Hyper Threading and Turbo Boost 2.0. The basic CPU clock of 2.3 GHz, but not automatically clocked up to 2.9 GHz under load.

They alternately available i3-2310M processor is the gateway to Sandy Bridge range dual core standard. In addition to the basic clock lower than 2.1 GHz, particularly distinguished himself with his lack of turbo boost. You are better off with the chip i5 in high performance applications. But Intel Core i3 is sufficient for undemanding office use. You can find a comprehensive comparison of the new Intel dual core here.

Unfortunately, we have no solid comparative data on the Celeron 847. According to the model number of the chip, it is on par with the old Intel i3 330UM. This equates to loss of performance was higher than 50% compared to the Core, and I processors.

The test of Cinebench benchmark we executed for i5-2410M is in low-end laptop with a Core i5-2410M. This could be a sign that the CPU turbo not operated at its maximum. When we look at the clock in the CPU Cinebench R10 rendering test single-core, the frequency of both cores are typically 2.7 GHz. CPU does not perform several times its maximum clock of 2.9 GHz for a split second. Both cores were constant at 2.7 GHz for multi-core test.

We go to the application benchmarks. They evaluated our your V131 to test the system as a whole, including all components installed. We reach the composition of the excellent 7736 points PCMark Vantage, and moves well in the first third of all notebooks weve tested.

Youll find machines like the HP EliteBook 8460p is a powerful AMD processor i7 2610m and 6470M HD graphics (7734 points), or the Lenovo ThinkPad T420 also i7 Processor 2620m (7845 points) in the immediate vicinity. Dell V130 with an Intel 470UM managed only 3813 points in the test itself. So, V131 can more than double the performance of its reserves in its current configuration.

The last 7 PCMark 2359 Vostro V131 rewarded with good points and also starts at the front. In comparison: Toshiba Satellite 2936 R830 comes to points with the same processor, but installed the solid state drive (SSD) is compatible with a large amount in this case. Lenovo ThinkPad E320 Edge with i3-2310M processor accused clearly behind with 2009 points.

Western Digital hard drive WD5000BPKT installed in our unity gives us a taste of its performance with 4900 points in PCMark Vantage score. It is the current standard portfolio model V131 Vostro 7200 rpm. Dell no longer wish to use the models otherwise still normal 5400 rpm.

However, there are SSD faster to choose from. A 128 GB model is not identified can be selected for an extra € 220 instead of a hard disk 320GB/7200 rpm. More than 256 GB model is also expected to be available.

Back to our WD5000BPKT hard drive. Support data transfer rate reached an average of 88.9 good MB / s in the HDTune benchmark test. However, the access speed of 21.1 milliseconds remained very high, of course, below the level of a 7200 rpm hard drive.

Vostro V131 is not really suited for gaming with Intel Graphics HD 3000 graphics solution. However, one game at least equal in low and medium graphic details. More information about the games that work on the graphics card HD 3000 can be found in our Comparison of mobile graphics cards games.

Simple, Central – Multi-Computer Backup
Seagate built this product for simplicity. By focusing on the number one need for homes with more than one computer, Seagate designed an easy, centralized backup for each computer in the home, regardless of operating system. Seagate retooled the software and user experience for the Seagate Central shared storage so that it seamlessly provides a backup for each system on a home network, even in a mixed platform environment of Windows OS and Mac OS X computers. In addition to automatic and continuous backup of all the computers in a home, Seagate Central can also backup photos and videos directly from Facebook, a feature first introduced in the award-winning Backup Plus line of external drives.

“This is the ideal backup solution for the family of today, who increasingly have multiple computers, tablets and smart phones,” said Scott Horn, vice president of marketing at Seagate. “We focused on what would make Central easy to use in a home setting. Consumers will find Central storage is easy-to-use as a backup solution with great-looking apps that deliver access to people’s content from the world’s most popular mobile devices, as well as Samsung Smart televisions and Blu-ray players.”
A recent study from Parks Associates found consumers keep content in a wide variety of places including sites like Facebook. The average broadband household has 8% of their music, video, and photo content on social networking sites.

“Consumers are looking for storage solutions that help them consolidate and safeguard the content they’ve got scattered across a growing number of places,” said John Barrett, director of Consumer Analytics at Parks Associates. “Young consumers in particular do not have central repositories of content but rather many places where content naturally ends-up as a result of their media habits.”

Enjoy Your Movies and Music
In addition to its primary role as a total home backup device to organize content in one location, Central storage is also designed for easy media streaming. Once all your files and rich media are safely on the drive, Central storage organizes the content for you according to media type, such as videos, pictures, music and documents. Seagate then makes it easier than ever before to access entertainment and documents by providing free apps for Samsung Smart TVs and Blu-ray players, as well as Apple® iOS devices, Amazon Kindle HD and Android mobile devices. Central is DLNA certified and also works with Apple® AirPlay®, which means nearly any network-connected device can connect to it.
